Plaka Beach

It is a long strip of white sand with sand dunes behind the beach and emerald waters. It is one of the most beautiful beaches of Naxos island. Here you can enjoy the tropical water and a view of Paros.It is partly organized with umbrellas ,water sports facilities, diving club, cafeterias and tavernas.The beach extends for many hundred meters and there are many free spaces ,where someone can enjoy the water along.This beach is only 300 meters away from our villa. At this distance there is a mini market and a bus station that takes you to Chora (town).

Museums of Naxos

  • The Archaeological Museum is situated in the quarter of Kastro, Naxos Town
  • It is housed in a superb 17th century Venetian mansion, which used to be the Jesuit School of re Commerce before.
  • This really interesting museum exposes a collection of objects and art works dating from the late Neolithic period until the early Christian times.

As mentioned by Herodotus, Naxos surpassed all the islands in wealth (he pronounced the bliss of the islands) and many of its products were known in antiquity, such as Naxos marble, emery (naxia stone), wine (there was even a variety of grape " naxia kaloumeni"), almonds, sheep and goats and cypress, an aromatic plant with healing properties.

Villages

Apiranthos is a beautiful, mountainous village in the centre of Naxos. Surrounded by lush greenery and keeping its elegant architectural style, Apiranthos is still untouched by tourism. is a picturesque mountain village with a beautiful name meaning plenty of flowers. Apiranthos is located 32 km from the capital, between two green valleys, at an altitude of 650 metres. Apiranthos is one of the most beautiful and charming villages of Naxos, full of wonderful houses made with fine marble. It has many good tavernas and coffee shops. ( 26 km east of Chora ).

The village of Halki is located in the central area of the region of Tragea which is the biggest olive cultivation area of the Cyclades, 16 km from Hora, or Naxos Town. Halki has a long history and was once the capital of Naxos as well as its main administrative and trade centre. The many Neoclassical houses and buildings testify about the past wealth and power of the village. Many well-preserved Venetian Towers and fine Byzantine churches can be found in the area such as the 9th century Church of Panagia which is one of Naxos oldest churches and houses some beautiful Byzantine and post-Byzantine frescoes.

The Vallindra Citron distillery is in the heart of the village and can be entered for free. You are given a tour of the site where the famous Kitron of the area is made. It is interesting to see the workings up close and the tour gives plenty of interesting facts, not least that the liquid is actually made from Citron leaves.The tour ends, naturally, with some sampling of the product as well as Ouzo which is also made here. ( 16 km south east of Chora ).

Filoti is situated on quite a steep hill and the main street is lined by picturesque cafes and restaurants. The surrounded nature is gorgeous with green and mountainside views. ( 18 km south east of Chora ).

Potamia is a village famous for the production of fruits. It is close to Medieval towers, old mills and running water. Potamia, whose name means riverside, actually consists of three villages: Ano Potamia (Upper Riverside), Mesi Potamia (Middle Riverside) and Kato Potamia (Down Riverside). The name derived from a wonderful river that crosses these three villages and cold during nights take sweater with you it worths it. (26 Km from Chora ).

The Statue of Kouros in Melanes, Naxos: The remarkable statue of Kouros can be seen outside the village of Melanes, in the countryside of Naxos. There is a second Kouros statue located outside of the village of Apollonas, in northern Naxos. The statue of Melanes lies on the ground, at the exact position that it was found by the archeologists. It is 6 metres long and dates back to 7th century.

Archeologists believe that this statue used to hold a temple roof but they were decidedly abandoned by the ancient sculptors due to faults in the marble and stone that were made of. Historians assume that the statue depict god Apollo or god Dionysus. Others believe that the statue represented a local hero, which is why it is so large in size. Remains of ancient temples surround Kouros statue. There is a third Kouros Statue about 200m away from this one. (8 Km from Chora ).

Zas Cave at Filoti

The Cave of Zas in Naxos, Cyclades: The Cave of Zas is located at the western side of Mount Zas, at an altitude of 600 meters. According to the Greek mythology, God Zeus was raised here as he found shelter in the cave while he was prosecuted by his father, Kronus. Afterwards, it was here that he was given the mighty lighting that made him ruler of Olympus and to honor him, the Naxians named the mountain as well as cave after him. The cave exhibits unique geological interest. A 10 meters high and 2,5 meters wide gate leads to the impressive interior of the cave, that can reach 115 of height and 75 meters in width. The cave has imposing stalactites and stalagmites, while archaeological research in 1962 brought to light finding from various historic periods (neolithic, roman etc.) During the Ottoman Sovereignty, it was used as a refuge, and near the entrance you can find the chapel of Zoodochos Pigi. If you are interested in visiting the cave, you can choose between two different paths, one starting off Filoti and the other off Danakos village, near the church of Agia Marina. Special signs will provide you guidance, while near the cave you will find the fountain of Aries, with it crystal-clear, drinkable water. The view from the cave to the Aegean Sea is spectacular, while there is rich flora and fauna in the surrounding area. (20 Km from Chora).

Temple of Demetra in Gyroulas (Sagri)

It is located a few km after Sagri while you will also see a road sign on your left shortly before entering the village. The region is called Gyroulas and the temple, which is dedicated to the goddess Demetra, is one of the most important ancient buildings of Naxos. Built between 530 and 520 B.C and entirely made of white marble, this temple dominates over a rise of a fertile valley. It faces the sea as well as Zas Mountain. In the 6th century the ancient sanctuary was turned into a Christian basilica church. (12 Km from Chora).
